Alaska Airborne Infantry
On p. 118 of GR, Sarah continues her discussion of the time she chose to be present at the deployment ceremony for the Alaska-based Airborne Infantry Brigade over attending yet another luncheon in connection with the 2006 campaign for the Governorship of Alaska. She wrote on p. 117, "I chose the troops, the other guys chose the luncheon."
Now she continues on the same subject, "My opponents and the press had a field day with that one: 'Palin a No-Show at Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Debate.' The guys' campaigns raised such a fuss about it that they wouldn't let Sean [Parnell--lieutenant-governor candidate] participate; he was permitted to give only short opening remarks.
"I couldn’t make the media understand why I had chosen to skip another rubber-chicken campaign stop and instead attend this significant military exercise. I tried to explain: the chamber of commerce would be here next week; our troops would not."
Well, is it true that she did not appear at the luncheon?
Yes …
… the material fact is true enough.
However, in this place we may make a very useful distinction between "material" facts and "formal" motives.
This distinction is so crucial that it can make the difference between noble actions and ignoble ones; between heroism and villainy … in the end it can make the difference between Heaven and Hell.
Material facts are like a blank metal coin. The motivation behind acts is like the image that is stamped on that coin. The images can range anywhere on the moral spectrum from the image of Christ to the image of Satan.
Yes, it is true that she did not show up at this luncheon, but it was to serve a much higher and loftier purpose and goal: To honor our troops!!
Suppose, for example, that a woman kills a man with a firearm. That is a material fact.
But what is the motive?
If it is to rob him of his goods, the act is gravely evil.
But what if it is a case like that of Scarlett O'Hara in the book and movie "Gone with the Wind"??
Scarlett shoots a Yankee deserter who threatens violence to her person and to her home.
Scarlett shoots him dead. The homicide is justifiable, even praiseworthy!
As we confront, then, the Ministers of Mendacity, who are in service to barack obama and to Sarah's enemies in the GOP Establishment, we must wield the mighty Sword of Truth, the Blade of Keen Intellectual Distinctions.
They will try to muddy our minds and confuse our spirits and dismay our hearts in the War for America.
We must meet them and crush them, with minds and hearts that are made up at once of gold and of steel.
GOLD, TO LOVE ALL THAT IS TRUE AND BEAUTIFUL AND GOOD;
STEEL, TO CUT TO PIECES AND RIBBONS FOUL WEBS AND TANGLES OF FALSEHOOD.
And we must make choices like the one that our Sarah made in 2006, placing the REALITY of honoring our troops over the APPEARANCE of showing up at a luncheon.
We must choose, as she did, as she does, to do what is RIGHT …
And damn the outward appearances and the temporary consequences.
"I chose the troops; the other guys chose the luncheon."
